It has been called the “villa with squared turret” from reasons that can be easily noticed: the villa of Copou where the well known Romanian writer, Mihail Sadoveanu has lived but where may personalities of the Romanian culture passed – we mention only Mihail Kogalniceanu and George Enescu- ,has a squared tower, which dominates the building façade. It is impossible to pass by it, in a relaxed walking through the famous park of Iasi, Copou, without notice it – and visit it.

Mihail Sadoveanu has lived here from 1918 to 1936, succeeding Enescu, who has lived three years in the villa built in 1842 by Mihail Kogalniceanu.

Here is an important fragment from the official presentation of the museum with regard to this period: „By chance, Mihail Sadoveanu happened to come in the new house of Copou, in a moment when George Enescu was about to leave(…) For many months, Euterpe and Erato have presided both the same house. Finally, the muse of Mihail Sadoveanu has remained to rule by herself “.

Before moving to Bucharest, that muse and Iasi have inspired Sadoveanu a lot of memorable operas: who did not read, at least once, “Venea o moara pe Siret”(A Mill Was Floating Down the Siret), “Hanu-Ancutei” (Ancuta’s Inn), “Zodia Cancerului” (Under the Sign of the Crab), “Baltagul”(The Hatchet), “Fratii Jderi”(The Jderi Brothers)? For this reason but also many more others that you have to discover, the Memorial House of Mihail Sadoveanu deserves to be thoroughly visited.

The Museum dedicated to Sadoveanu is since 1980 and it has six rooms, arranged as to illustrate the house history and also the history of its famous inhabitants and, especially, to evoke the life and opera of the great writer.

So, the curious ones shall discover, step by step, room by room, documents regarding the history of the house and of the personalities who have lived in the turret villa.

The documents and the objects evoking the years of school and the debut of the writer Sadoveanu are a curiosity. You may discover the room of guests reception and objects evoking the great passions of Sadoveanu – fishing, hunting and chess, but also many other rare things.

If you want to come closer to the place where the great novels of Sadoveanu were born, you should schedule your visit in Iasi on the first Sunday of May, due to an additional reason: all the courtyard of the turret villa is in blossom and the “Sarbatoarea liliacului” (the Lilly’s Holiday) is organised. You need to remember that from Tuesday to Sunday, the museum program is from  10.00 to 17.00, and Monday is closed.
