The Memorial House of George Bacovia, considered the most important symbolist poet of our literature, should be one of the most important stops on a cultural circuit throughout Romania. But, do not be shy and visit this house- museum also even you are only passing through Bacau.


Situated on George Bacovia (first called the Liceului Street), near the statute of Stefan cel Mare, the memorial house has been opened to the public, for the first time, in 1971.


The museum curator tells that the parents of Bacovia moved here in 1906, while the poet was a student in Bucharest, at the Law Faculty. But, when he came home, for holidays, the young George wrote one of the most known poems dedicated to the spring, “Note de primavara”(Spring Notes), actually from the window of this house.


The house has recently benefit of funds for renovation, consolidation works being executed. In the five rooms of the house which are opened to visitors, the tourists can admire personal objects and also the original furniture which belonged to the writer. Here there are also exhibited original manuscripts and patrimony pieces.


Not, at last, the house living room is dedicated to the memory of the poet’s parents, Zoe and Dimitrie Vasiliu, here the piano, violin and their portraits being kept on a place of honour.


The house courtyard has been restored in the cultural spirit of the place, therefore, here you can admire sculptures done by contemporaneous artists.


For a more complete tour, a videotape is made available to visitors, on this videotape, there is a documentary, where appears also the poet, who died in 1957, at 75 years old. More, you will hear actually George Bacovia reciting his own poetry, on an audio tape.


If you will not be impressed by the memorial house,  be sure that the poet’s life will seem very interesting. Besides the poetry for which he is know, Bacovia did not remark himself since high school as a complete artist,  playing more instruments, being exceptional in violin, and wining the first award  for Romania, on drawing contest for young persons.


After he has tried the Military School of Iasi, abandoning it in the second semester, he subsequently decides to attend the courses of the Law Faculty of Bucharest, than of the similar institution of Iasi. Finally he settled down in Bucharest, where he died, in the house he owned in the Giurgiului district.
