“Filmul de Piatra” – Festival of the Short Film

The event takes place during the period January 6, 2011 – January  9, 2011.

On 6th of January, in Piatra Neamt, a new edition of the short film festival “Filmul de Piatra” begins. “Thought as a prolongation of the winter vacation, the festival fights on two fronts: for one hand, it offers to the invited cinema men an original place, with a various offer to the spend their free time, in which they can find the mountain, the skiing, the cable car or the pool; on the other  hand, the public of Neamt, greedy for films and cultural events, is being offered a complex program, for all the ages and tastes”, declares the director Andrei Dascalescu, manager of the festival. The main program of the “Filmul de Piatra” Festival is the competition of short film, addressed exclusively to the films produced by authors from Romania and Republic of Moldavia. A record number of films, 209 films have been registered at the preselection, a total of 16 hours of short films. 9 animation movies, 8 documentaries, 12 experimental films, 14 fiction film and 12 videos have arrived in the final selection. The jury that shall grant the trophy “Filmul de Piatra” to the best film of each category, is made of the British image manager, David Procter, the young actress Irina Saulescu and the director Copel Moscu. Also, the spectators shall vote the most popular film upon  the exit from the movie theatres. Besides the films in competition, the public has encounters with programs of partner festivals in Romania and abroad: Animest, TIFF, Next, ShortsUp, Filminute, a selection of Oscar nominees or Oscar winners short films, and many special projections, among which, the long film “ Nunta in Basarabia” (Wedding in Bessarabia)  and the most loved Romanian film for children, Veronica, under the direction of Elisabeta Bostan. The festival has also a special guest who, although is not a professional cinema man, is without doubt the Romanian who has filmed the highest images: Ticu Lacatusu, the first Romanian who has climbed the Everest, and also the only one who has conquered the highest peaks of the 7 continents. In a special program, the alpinist shall present movies from  his expeditions and shall tell the audience about his passion and about limit situations. Member of the jury, David Procter shall keep a workshop of film image, in which he will present fragments of his works including documentary films and fiction films, that have won a lot of prizes and videos for Simian Mobile Disco and Wild Beasts. The festival takes place between 6th – 9th of January. The projections shall take place at the Youth Theatre, and the entrance is free. The festival is organised by a very young team of volunteers, most of them students. In spite of the successes had by the previous editions, the Festival is sub –financed by CNC, but it is supported also by many local partners, national and international, among which the most important is the City Hall of Piatra Neamt.
