Culture and art

The culture and art were and shall be well represented in the North East region of Romania.

The Iasi county is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania. We should mention that in the city of Iasi, county capital, there is the “Al.I. Cuza” University, the oldest university in Romania. In the county of Iasi lived and created important names of the autochthonous culture:  the chroniclers Grigore Ureche, Miron Costin, Ion Neculce, the writers Costache Negruzzi and Mihail Sadoveanu, and also the poet Vasile Alecsandri.

Here are some of the cultural objectives that you shall find in this county:  the House of “Ion Creanga”, The Palace of Culture of Iasi, The “V. Pogor” House, The Moldavia Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tatarasi Atheneum, The Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre, The Luceafarul Theatre, The Romanian National Opera House of Iasi, The DANA Art Gallery.

The history of the county of Vaslui is closely related to the life and activity of personalities who have brought an important contribution to the development of the Romanian culture. Here we can remember Nicolae Milescu Spatarul,  known for his journeys in China, Siberia and Mongolia,   the man of letters and political person Dimitrie Cantemir, the ruler  Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the biologist Emil Racovita,  the comedian Constantin Tanase.

The list of cultural institutions of the county of Vaslui is much more generous: the Unions Culture House “Constantin Tanase”, The County Centre for Conservation and Preservation of the Popular Tradition and Creation, The Padureni Cultural Centre, the “George Tutoveanu” Unions Culture House (Barlad).

In the county of Vaslui you can also find the “Victor Ion Popa “ Theatre (Barlad),  325 libraries and also many museums (The “Dimitrie Cantemir” Memorial Museum of Husi,  The “Vasile Parvan” Museum of Barlad, The Wine Museum of Husi etc)

The county of Botosani is considered a true centre of the Romanian culture. We should not forget that here were born important personalities like: the great poet Mihai Eminescu, the painter Stefan Luchian, the composer George Enescu, the historian Nicolae Iorga, the biologist Grigore Antipa.

Here, in this county, the theatre had always a privileged fate. The first theatre representation of this region was in October 1838 by the Costache Caragiale troupe. We should mention that in those times, the city of Botosani was the only city in which the theatre plays were performed in the Romanian language.

Now, two theatres can be found in this county: the “Mihai Eminescu” Theatre and the “Vasilache” Theatre. The classic music fans can delight themselves by going to the concerts performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Botosani.  The popular music fans can assist to the shows of the “Rapsozii Botosaniului” Orchestra. There are also two art galleries: a private one (“City Gallery”) and a state one  (the “Stefan Luchian” Art Galleries).

The city of Botosani has also a large network of libraries. The main fund can be found in the “Mihai Eminescu” Library, which has 50 branches located in different parts of the county.

Many personalities who need no presentation Calistrat Hogas, Ion Creanga, Vasile Conta are related to the regions of the county of Neamt. Also in case of this county, the cultural patrimony is an impressive one: 30 museums (The History Museum of Piatra Neamt), memorial objectives (the memorial houses of I. Creanga, C. Hogas, V. Micle, Al. Vlahuta, M. Sadoveanu), 20 monasteries, 25 sketes, 74 libraries, theatres (Youth Theatre – Piatra Neamţ, Your Theatre, the INUSH Puppets Theatre etc), art galleries (Art Deco, Lascar Vorel, Topart, Sestri Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art Piatra Neamt).

The poet George Bacovia, Tristan Tzara (founder of the Dadaist cultural movement), the composer George Enescu, the actors Radu Beligan and Ernest Maftei are only a few of the “stars” that the county of Bacau can be  proud of.

Some of the main culture institutions we can find in Bacau are: the “George Bacovia” Memorial House, the “Rosetti Tescanu – George Enescu” Cultural Centre, The “Bacovia” Dramatic Theatre, The Museum of History, the Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the County Library, the “G. Apostu” International Cultural Centre, the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Anton Ciobanu Galleries of Ceramic Arts the “Alfa” Galleries.

On the regions of the county of Suceava we can meet inestimable cultural values of national and international interest.

In the county of Suceava, “raiul Moldovei”(the Moldavia’s Heaven), as the great Eminescu used to caress, we find the Bucovina Museum Complex, the Gallery of Important Persons, the “Ion Irimescu” Art Museum, the Waters Museum of Falticeni, the Museum of Bucovina Popular Techniques of Radauti, the Wood Museum of Campulung Moldovenesc, the memorial houses “Nicolae Labis” (Malini), “Ciprian Porumbescu” (Stupca).

In Suceava we can find the Ciprian Porumbescu Ensemble, the House of Friendship but also the “Ion Irimescu” Art Gallery. Unfortunately, in this county, the theatre movement is weakly represented. The sole institution of this kind is the Bucovina Theatre Company.
